Chebeague Island Inn
This tiny island (pronounced sha-BEEG) is more Maine than an L.L. Bean catalog, complete with rocky beaches, gravelly walking paths lined with wildflowers, and lobstermen at the docks.
A 90-minute ferry ride from Portland, Chebeague grows quieter as the air grows cooler, and quiet is what most visitors seek here. The Inn's 21 white-washed rooms have no phones or TVs - though they do offer fine Italian linens and down comforters.
What to do: Khaki-clad guests might bike the dirt roads, scour the beaches for sea glass, or cruise Casco Bay with a local boat captain.
Closed for the season in mid-October. From $185; 207-846-5155; www.chebeagueislandinn.com
